The Celebration of Women
With March being Women’s History Month, we only find it fitting to highlight and discuss some amazing women who have inspired us this past year. Most of 2020 and even now in 2021, we are persevering through a pandemic that has completely shifted our daily lives. There have been struggles and obstacles, but with these hardships came lessons that are only helping us grow and evolve into better individuals and hopefully, a better world. These 9 women we will be spotlighting have helped us get through it all whether it was listening to their music, reading their words, seeing their work, or just simply feeling empowered by their presence.
Stevie Nicks
Front woman of Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Nicks is a prominent influential woman in the music industry, specifically in the very male-dominated rock and roll space. She is the only woman to be inducted twice in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and is a musical inspiration to many, including Beyonce, Taylor Swift and Harry Styles. Her music transcends time and evokes such authentic vulnerability and openness making her the perfect soundtrack for those wanting to get creative, emotionally in-tuned, or in need of a dreamy tune.
Amanda Gorman
An award-winning writer and cum laude graduate of Harvard University, Amanda won the hearts of Americans during her 2021 inaugural speech where she recited her poem, ‘The Hill We Climb.’ The poise and grace she held while speaking such powerful words left an imprint on our souls— giving us hope for a greater future and also giving us motivation to be the hope we are all looking for. Gorman is the youngest person to speak at an inauguration in U.S. history and has three books releasing soon through Penguin Random House.
Jeanie Buss
A Sports executive and the controlling owner and president of the Los Angeles Lakers, Jeanie Buss may be the most powerful women in the sports industry. In 2020, Buss became the first woman owner to guide her team, the LA Lakers, to an NBA championship. Although in an evidently male-dominated industry, Buss along with other women in professional sports have a seat at the table and are opening up more seats for those wanting to follow in their footsteps.
Kathrin Jansen
Head of Vaccine Research and Development at Pfizer, Kathrin Jansen helped lead the clinical trials of the COVID-19 vaccine which is now being distributed all over the world. Jansen previously led the development in the HPV vaccine, Gardasil, and has been at the forefront of medicine and novel pharmaceuticals. An inspiration to many as she has contributed so much to medicine. Her leading role in the COVID-19 vaccine is the light at the end of the tunnel we are all so near.
Katie Porter
A U.S. Representative for California’s 45th congressional district, Katie Porter is the first Democrat to represent her district in Orange County. She has earned a reputation for her tough questioning of officials in congressional hearings, frequently using whiteboards as a visual aid. Porter, alongside AOC and many other phenomenal women holding political office, are pushing the limits in social and justice change. We see her talk the talk and walk the walk.
Meryl Streep
Oftentimes described as the best actress of her generation, Meryl Streep has paved the way for other women in Hollywood. Her countless extraordinarily complex and multifaceted portrayals in media represent the diversity and variance women bring to the table in entertainment and everyday life. Meryl was presented with the Cecil B. DeMille at the Golden Globes by friend Viola Davis where Davis says, “You make me proud to be an artist”— an all encompassing statement of Meryl’s artistry and influence.
Hannah Skvarla
Hannah is a co-founder of The Little Market, a nonprofit fair trade shop featuring ethically sourced products that are handmade by artisans around the world. She has dedicated her life to helping women break the cycle of poverty so they can create a better future for themselves and their families. Skvarla is committed to empowering women and advocating for human rights.
Winnie Harlow
Winnie Harlow rose to fame in 2014 as a contestant on America’s Next Top Model and is now a renowned fashion model. Being a public spokesperson for the skin condition vitiligo, Winnie is a vanguard in owning who you are and being unapologetically yourself.
Gisele Bündchen
One of the highest paid models in the world, Gisele is credited with beginning and popularizing many high-fashion model trends still seen today. Vogue credited her with ushering in the healthy, fit look and Bundchen pioneered the ‘horse-walk’, a stomping movement models use on the runway. She has been a Goodwill Ambassador for the UN Environment Program since 2009 and has focused her work in social & environmental causes. Gisele is also now on the Board of Directors of Rainforest Alliance.
We hope going through this phenomenal list of women leaves you inspired and empowered. Happy Women’s Month! Here’s to all the strong women in and out of our lives— may we know them, may we be them, may we raise them.
