5 East Coast Weekend Getaways

We all can agree that this last year has brought out a collective yearning to take better care of ourselves, and there’s no better way than a little R&R during a weekend getaway. Here are five East Coast Weekend Getaway destinations that are at the top of our lists!

Assateague

If your ideal weekend getaway consists of something a bit more off the grid, Assateague Island is for you! Camping in this National Park is a bit of a hidden gem, but well worth the travel! The island is a petite strip of land that runs along Maryland and Virginia’s coastline. Typically more popular during the summer and warmer months, the park is open year-round to visitors. The most unique part about Assateague Island is the wild horses you will see roaming across the landscape. They are not tame, and have been residents of the island since the 1600s. There are many legends about the origin of the feral horses, but most speculate that they are survivors of a shipwreck!

Newport, Rhode Island

Newport, Rhode Island - home to exquisite mansions and miles of breathtaking coastline. The city is renowned for its rich history, colonial homes, outdoor entertainment (especially during the summer), and ocean activities! Bellevue Ave, Thames Street, and Broadway street are lined with boutiques and New-England inspired retail. Perhaps the most infamous activity is the Cliff Walk, a 3.5 mile path that navigates past some of the most astonishing historic properties. Truly the perfect opportunity to grab a coffee and start off your day! Newport is also the home of America’s first polo club, established in 1876. The sport’s tradition has been preserved and there is a series match every Saturday during the summer, so be sure to slot out time to watch! To many people’s surprise, Newport does have a few vineyards - Greenvale Winery offers tastings and a serene spot to unwind on the Sakonnet River. An East Coast weekend getaway wouldn’t be one without some time at the beach! Locals and tourists alike bask in the sun and enjoy the soft, white sand beaches of the aptly named First, Second, and Third Beach.

 Charleston, South Carolina

Our destination list would not be complete without the charming Charleston, South Carolina. From Rainbow Road to waterfront views, this town is what weekend getaway dreams are made of! For the most part, Charleston is a walkable city (or uber friendly), but renting bikes is a fun way to explore! Start your day at Carmella’s Dessert Bar or The Daily for coffee and pastries, then off to your adventures. The city is home to beloved boutiques and shops, and King Street is the perfect place to start. Be sure to stop at Skinny Dip, you can shop on the bottom floor then head to the second floor to their rooftop patio for drinks  - hello happy hour! Charleston also offers a year-round flea market that houses unique pieces (pottery, jewelry, paintings, and more!) to take a piece of southern charm home with you. If you’re looking for a place to dip your toes in the sand, Sullivan’s Island and Isle of Palms are nearby. Charleston is home to many restaurants that offer delicious fares, but  Table and Tavern, 5Church, and The Darling Oyster Bar are among our favorites!

Martha’s Vineyard

It is a truth universally acknowledged that there isn’t an All-American getaway quite like a weekend spent on Martha’s Vineyard. White wash and shingle houses, rows of periwinkle hydrangeas, and a magnificent display of American flags are among the beacons of this Massachusetts island.  A popular destination for those seeking a laid-back ambience, the Vineyard is home to three towns: Edgartown, Vineyard Haven, and Oak Bluffs. Edgartown is popular for its relaxing environment, adorable shops and small restaurants offer the setting for a more private and reclusive weekend. Oak Bluffs offers a bit more of an active nightlife with an array of boutiques and restaurants for every visitor. We love Morning Glory Farm for a farm-to-table dining experience and picturesque views. Lookout Tavern, Back Door Donuts, the Red Cat, and the Black Dog Dockside are staples of Oak Bluffs. During the day, you can stroll through the towns’ boutiques, visit Gay Head Light House, or Aquinnah Cliffs!

Nassau, Paradise Island or Baha Mar

First up is Nassau, a Bahamian city only a short one hour flight from Ft. Lauderdale! White sand beaches and turquoise waters surround this coastal gem. Visiting travelers love to ascend The Queen’s Staircase, dating back to the 1700s, to see the highest point in the city. Ofcourse, local artisans can be found at the waterfront Straw Market for those who love to shop. And Bahamian cuisine is worth the exploration - fresh seafood, conch salad, and an array of street vendors around every corner. For those who love active adventures, you can take a water taxi to Blue Lagoon island to soak up the sun. A one hour boat ride will take you to Big Major Cay to swim with pigs - a must do for any traveler!

Wherever you find yourself for your next East Coast weekend getaway, we hope you take home a bit of the small town American charm or experience one of the many beautiful countries and cultures that are only a short flight away!
