Travel Diary: Maui

Maui is an island full of lush greenery and an abundance of true Hawaiian culture. While we absolutely love to travel to new places and experience new things, we also love to learn about the places we visit to better understand the land, people, and culture. It is filled with history dating back 100 generations, and the Road to Hana has some of the richest history of the entire Hawaiian Islands as countless battles were fought in Hana. Many kings from Maui and the Big Island attempted to rule the whole island of Maui from the gorgeous setting of Hana. Eventually King Pi’ilani (Moi of West Maui), married his daughter to Chief Hoolae (chief of Hana), and unified East and West Maui. The unification brought an abundance of peace and prosperity, two qualities of life we see lived throughout all of Hawaii.

Maui is the island for those who want an adventure and peaceful getaway alike— it is about the experience you choose to create for yourself. In helping you create that perfect experience, here is our travel guide on navigating the majestic and spiritual island of Maui.

What to Do

Explore Paia: On the northern coast of Maui is the beautiful city of Paia where you can take the full day to explore, watch the surfers, visit Road to Hana, and enjoy some of the best restaurants on the island. Head down to the beach for a quick tanning session and/or a rejuvenating dip in the ocean. We also recommend walking around because it’s one of the best ways to explore and get to know the land and its culture!

Whale Watch: Every year from December through March the North Pacific humpback whales migrate to the warm tropical waters of Hawaii and show off their astonishing and powerful presence. If you are visiting during this season, you definitely need to book a tour to whale watch.

Discover Local Artisans: When visiting different nooks of Maui, make sure to shop with local artisans. You will find unique pieces that you can bring home for yourself or your friends to remember your trip to Hawaii.

Horseback Riding: Horseback riding is one of our favorite activities and it always feels like an intimate reconnection to ourselves and the natural world.
